Online Time Trial, or OTT for short, is a new game mode that tests the raw skill of all players. Online races start like they always do, but with one twist: everything is set up to look like a time trial. You start with three mushrooms, at the start position used in time trials and all other players appear as ghosts and can't be interacted with. There are no second tries, so consistency is rewarded. Because every track requires its own optimal character/vehicle combination, each player is given the possibility to change their combination after a track has been selected.

Setup for friend rooms

OTT can be enabled only by the host in the channel settings. If the 'Online Time Trials' setting is enabled, every room you create as host will be an OTT room regardless of the setting for the joining players. Enabling this setting also makes the room Sanbo exclusive, which means that players without the pack or on the wrong version of the pack will not be able to join.

Note that as of v1.1, it is not yet possible to play OTT in worldwides. This feature is, however, planned to be added in the near future and relies on a new Wiimmfi region being assigned.

Important features

Other than the obvious, there are a couple of quality-of-life features and implementations that may improve the overall experience of players:

• When the "OTT: show time difference" setting is enabled in the channel, a timing popup similar to that in normal ghost races will show up under the lap counter at the end of each lap. This timing shows the time difference to either the player currently in first or the player directly ahead of you depending on what setting has been selected. When you are in first yourself, the time to second place will be shown instead once the second placed player crosses the finish line.
• It's possible to mute other player's characters and vehicles with the "OTT: mute other players" channel setting.
• The full character selection screen will be loaded after a track has been selected and the player is given 10 seconds to pick their favourite combination for a given track. For players that prefer the method used in the old OTT Riivolution pack, pressing start or + (depending on the controller) will load a screen where the d-pad can be used to switch character. As of v1.1 you have to pay attention to the track on the roulette, a small update whereby this track is shown to the player on the character select screen is planned.
• At the end of each race, the rankings will show the finish time of all players instead of their names.
